What a couple of days! Chris is uploading photos right now of our last few days with the Fulani tribe.
I’ll be posting much more when i return to the USA in a few days, but very quickly: an amazing time in the middle of the bush with four fulani families. Fresh cow milk, sleeping under a tent made from branches, incredible food, the nicest of people, and the most beautiful scenery. The cows are huge! And I say that having been around bulls before in the states- there is no comparison to the size.
We spent two nights with them at their camp. It was a few hours in walking to get there and probably 4 hours getting back to village. On our way back to village we were crossing a grassy area, I was second in line behind our fulani guide. He had gingerly been pointing out obstacles to me throughout the morning so I would not trip. Next thing I knew- my foot was about six inches from landing on a Bitis Arietans snake! The fulani guide had stopped me just short of stepping on the deadliest snake in all of Africa- and in doing so probably saved my life. The nearest clinic was still a few hours away, and the nearest hospital almost a day away!
He then proceeded to grab chris’ machette and hack smack the snake several times so we could pass safely…
Check out his photos- there’s one of the dead snake. In hindsight I wish we had carried it out with us as the neighboring village often eats it, but oh well.
Heading back towards Ghana today- we’ll stop in Lomè for a day or two and then chris will leave me at the border. Back home in portland tuesday night…
More later…
