Greetings from Lopez Island, in the heart of the San Juan Islands. We had
hoped to update all of you sooner, but unfortunately, or rather fortunately,
technology is not as widespread here in the San Juan’s.
A beautiful week it has been. From Port Angeles we sailed on to Decatur
Island in heavy fog. As the sun broke through, we were granted views into one
of the most stunning parts of the country. A safe haven for all, the San Juan
Islands are spectacular beyond words. We have also been treated to
hospitality from the local residents way beyond the call of duty.
Decatur Island is all private, but we were able to check it all out because of
a friend with some local property. The residents of the island, the locals
hanging out at the grass airstrip, and the friendly folks at Alma’s Country
Store were more than we could have asked for.
After a couple days we moved on over to Fisherman Bay on Lopez Island. The
channel is very narrow and shallow, but once you enter the bay, well worth the
edgy entry. My Mom and Step-dad joined us for a couple days of relaxation. We
attempted to sail to Friday’s Harbor, only to find a sand bar instead and five
hours of low tide. Fortunately once the tide came back in, we lifted right
off and headed back into the marina.
Shawn had to fly home for a few days, and just “had” to take the Beaver Float
Plane to get there. Matt and I look forward to his return in the near future,
but are contemplating the same decision purely for the adventurous flight.
Plans are to hang out here for the week and look for some manual labor to
supplement our vacation. I am also playing piano in the lounge for the dinner
hour here at the resort. More family and friends arrive this coming weekend!
Check out the webpage for some more pictures in the ‘albums’ section. Thanks
for all of your emails and letters of support!
Fair winds,
Josh and Matt
